Not unsurprisingly, the course highly recommends that we get into the habit of people-watching. Now.
It's a brilliant way to highten your levels of observation and by picking out the quirks and actions of complete strangers, you begin to build a basis of characteristics which you can adopt for your own fictional characters.
Something as human as chewing their nails when they're bored will make your characters feel more real and with substance rather than a stickman sprouting words.
A short video was provided(recycled from an earlier page) and we were to observe those present and pick out certain things i.e an older man wearing cameo but with a pink bobble tying up his long blond hair. This could possibly be his young girls bobble, or a long lost love's, which he has kept all this time. It's surprising what fictional details can be made from something so simple.
I personally loved the quirky girl near the end who certainly had a very eccentric style with very brightly coloured hair, yet she seemed somewhat anxious or bored(chewing her nails) and was acting more like an introvert than an extrovert as her outspoken style would suggest.
This could manifest into a number of things.
For one, a woman is explaining something to her, which she is nodding along acknowledging, but let's be honest, who doesn't do that when they're bored or not interested?
She's doing it out of politeness which is attributing to her introvert nature but dressed as an extrovert she could merely be annoyed at the fact that she hasn't been able to talk about herself for however many minutes.
There are a lot of options!
But to be honest, I would much prefer some real life people-watching.
So for the next few days I'm going to gain the habit of people watching and writing in my penguin book notebook!
Bring on the people!
